Ninth Annual Miles for SMILES Road Race & Walk!

Ninth Annual Miles for SMILES Road Race & Walk!

Family Fun at Miles for SMILES

Held April 23, this year’s Miles for SMILES included a new challenging but fun course at our Riggenbach Road location in Fall River. More than 300 people ran and walked the course around the Industrial Park in support of the SMILES Mentoring program.

“Research indicates that mentored children have more success in school and life.  Our greatest challenge is to obtain the amount of funding necessary to fully support SMILES so that we can provide a mentor for every child who needs one,” states Bob Canuel, President of People, Incorporated.

Bill Perkins, CEO of People Incorporated explains the importance of the Miles for SMILES event, “The establishment of the SMILES program was a direct response to research that identified mentoring as one of the most effective strategies to keep at-risk students in school through graduation. The Miles for SMILES event raises funds to support SMILES and its mission to help at-risk children realize their personal and educational potential through a large scale one-to-one mentoring program. The funds raised at this event will help SMILES provide mentors in 20 Southcoast schools each week.”

“People Incorporated’s Got Talent” winner Latifa Shepard who works within the Residential Division kicked off the race with a beautiful rendition of the national anthem.  This family-friendly event also included a photo booth, face painting, and arts and crafts. Runners and walkers were able to fuel up with fruit donated by Stop & Shop on Rodman Street in Fall River and delicious hot coffee and Munchkins donated by Bob Mungeon’s Dunkin Donuts.  Registered runners and walkers received long-sleeve event t-shirts along with gift bags to commemorate the event.

Sponsors, donors, and our amazing volunteers were the driving force behind the success of the Ninth Annual Miles for SMILES, which raised funds to benefit the SMILES program’s work in the Greater Fall River area.  Event Co-Chairs were Janice Carrigg and Janna Lafrance, who have been SMILES mentors for years and have a passion for the children they mentored and the positive influence they had in their mentee’s life. They also have witnessed significant outcomes because of the work of the SMILES Program in schools.  People Incorporated is proud to have them as mentors and members of the Board of Directors.
